Kitchen Islands

What To Consider Before Installing A Kitchen Island

[simple-social-share]

Kitchens with an island are often seen on the pages of design magazines and at professional exhibitions. Fabulous kitchen islands always attract attention. If you’re considering installing an island in your kitchen, we suggest that you formulate the task for a designer and let him work with you to figure out the best way to incorporate it. Depending on the main function of the island, you need to make a decision about its size, height, and other characteristics.

Kitchen islands look beautiful, save space, and offer extra storage and functionality – not to mention creating the overall impression of a more luxury and modern kitchen. Even if you’re not planning to sell right now, it’s never a bad idea to make your home more attractive while increasing its long-term value.

Since a kitchen island isn’t usually a super expensive item (compared to your avg remodeling project), it’s often a safe bet for a high return on investment (ROI). This is even more true if you factor in things like aesthetic value and enjoyment factor – even though those things are hard to estimate since they will differ from person to person.

Decide why you need an island in the kitchen

An island usually serves numerous functions:

  • Added counter space.  Depending on the layout of your kitchen, you may be lacking counter space to prepare food. If you love to cook, kitchen islands are a great way to add additional counter space to prepare food.
  • Dining table or seating area.  Large farm tables in the kitchen were previously used to add workspace.  Whether you need a breakfast nook, a place for people to gather to socialize or a spot for the kids to do homework while you’re preparing dinner, kitchen islands are a perfect choice!
  • Additional storage space.  Whether you need more storage space for items underneath the kitchen island countertop or you want overhead space (even for decoration, like pots, pans, wine glasses), kitchen islands are a sure way to double up your kitchen storage space.
  • A second sink.  Having a second sink gives you the option to use one sink for cleaning dishes and one for preparing food.  Furthermore, if you have more than two sets of hands assisting to prepare food, a second sink on a kitchen island is perfect for not making things too cramped or crowded.
  • Stove.  If you have a small amount of wall space or counter space, moving your stove to the kitchen island may be a great idea. Kitchen islands give you the flexibility of space that you need to expand your main kitchen appliances.

How much space do you need for the island?

A well-planned island layout can allow a smooth workflow and provide a comfortable space for preparing and cooking food.  The shape of a kitchen island can be rectangular, oval, round and curved. Different shapes of the island give different storage possibilities.

The general rule is that you will need at least 42 to 48 inches (106.68 cm to 121.92 cm) of open space around your kitchen island. Another general guideline: if your kitchen is less than 13 feet wide, we don’t recommend adding an island at all.

Most kitchen companies or designers offer options with a reduced depth, a customized height or extra-large cabinets tailored to suit a specific design and the space it is intended for.

The average size of a kitchen island is about 3 by 6½ feet (1,000 by 2,000 millimeters). This would typically have a surrounding clearance zone of about 40 inches (1,000 millimeters). But an island’s size is usually determined by the distances around it, so it makes sense that larger rooms can allow for bigger islands.

How high should your kitchen island be?

The height of the island depends on the purposes for which you want to use it. For example, you can make a two-tiered island with different heights for the cooking side and the eating side.

One of the advantages of custom-made kitchens is that you can make an island of any height depending on the height of your family members.

The most common islands are of the following dimensions:

  • Length – from 120 cm;
  • Width – from 60 to 150 cm;
  • Height – from 85 to 90 cm.

Another important point to factor in are the chairs. If the entire island or parts of it will be used for eating, the island must be made so high that it is comfortable to stand and sit next to it.

How will the island fit into the overall design of the kitchen?

The island in the kitchen automatically attracts attention. This fact can be played into the overall design in two ways. You can decorate the island harmoniously in the same colors with the kitchen so that it does not stand out so much. On the contrary, highlight the island with other materials or colors and make it the “heart” of the kitchen.

In terms of convenience and practicality, the island can also be a very profitable solution.
