Remodeling 101: Is It Worth It for You?

[simple-social-share]

Let’s be honest. House envy is real. Your sister just got the kitchen she’s always wanted, your best friend just knocked down all her walls and has achieved her open floor plan dreams. Now you’re thinking, “What about me?”

There’s a lot to consider before committing to a remodeling project. Your home is more than the sum of its parts. Your kitchen does more than cook, it nurtures. Your bedroom does more than shelter, it restores. Don’t get us wrong. We’re all for the remodel around here. We just think you should see the whole picture before you begin. Remodeling 101: Is It Worth It for You?

Ask yourself these questions:

How Long Are You Staying?

Your plans for the future will greatly affect whether you choose to remodel now. Planning to sell in the next five years? Perhaps a few updates would do you good. On the other hand, if the kids are grown and you love the neighborhood, resale value may not be a consideration. Remodeling projects to your forever home are more about your preferences than recouping what you spend.

How Would a Remodel Affect Your Relationships?

If your aging father is in the hospital and your wife is nine months pregnant, it may not be a great time to sledgehammer the shower wall. This seems obvious, but it’s not always easy to see. Home construction of any kind puts stress on even the healthiest relationships. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should never remodel! Just consider the state of your closest relationships and time it accordingly.

Is Your House the House You Want?

Perhaps the unrest your feeling is more than a floating countertop or a new backsplash can fix. If you find yourself discontent with the layout, the backyard, and all the bathrooms perhaps this house just isn’t for you. You’ll be better off searching for the right house rather than trying to remodel the current one.

Your home and the changes you make to it are entirely your own. Only you can decide if a remodeling project is worth it for you. Inform yourself, take time to consider, and then sally forth!
